    My wife & I eat here once a month. The atmosphere is different from the usual dining experience. You either like or hate Chef Alfi. The food is great. No menu, no prices but fair pricing. If you don't have a good sense of humor you may find the Chef irritating, but this is all part of the unique experience.

    This was possibly THE worst restaurant experience EVER. The chef/owner is abrasive and has no clue how to run a restaurant with tact. He doesn't let you order what you want and makes you feel like a jerk if you dont order what HE wants you to eat. Don't waste your money here. . tons of resturants that are as good and won't make you feel as bad as you will feel after giving this jerk your money. He gives Italians a bad name!

    I need to begin this review by pointing out a few things. One, I'm Italian and I love to cook and I love to eat. Two, do not pay attention to the review by Joe S, it appears he does not like any restaurant and has no clue what real Italian food should taste like. As for as San Vilvaldo's, let me say there are many great restaurants in RI, but none of them really make me feel like I would want to go back. After reading the reviews and testimonials for San Vivaldo Trattoria, I had to give it a try. This is not your typical restaurant experience. If want to choose your meal from a menu and need to know how much it is, then go somewhere else. This experience is like going to your grandmother's (Italian) house. It is a small establishment, maybe 10 tables. There is a waiter, but let's call him the owners helper. He really only brings the water, bread and clears the plates. The owner/chef does the rest. The first time I went was last winter with my husband and then on June 13th with a party of 8 consisting of my cousins, sister and our husbands. As my experience was the first time, Alfi didn't disappoint. You will get the typical Italian multiple course meal. He will come out and ask if you would like wine, open the bottle for you, ensure you like it, then pour everyone a glass. He always serves the women first, which I think is great, you don't see many restaurants doing that anymore. He tells us to relax and he goes into the kitchen to continue cooking for the other customers. When he returns he explains he can start us off with individual antipasti with salad tomato, frittata, melon with prosciutto. We said no argument there. He brings us each our own individual plate consisting of some mixed greens with a nice vinaigrette, a small piece of spinach and egg frittata, a small stuffed roma tomato and a perfect piece of melon wrapped in prosciutto. There was enough on the plate that I could have been satisfied with just that and the bread. After we finished and the "helper" clears the plates (don't stack the plates on top of each other) Alfi comes out and asks what feel like eating. Do you want veal, fish, chicken what type of sauce etc..? He explains how he will cook it and takes our orders in addition to another bottle of wine. I'm not sure how long it took, maybe 30 min before all 8 entrees were brought out together. All of the entrees were some type of pasta with the selected meat/sauce except for the veal, which my husband chose. This was served with a side vegetable and some linguini. I had what he called a pork stew. It was marinated pork in a red sauce over penne, it was a nice blend of herbs. All of our pasta was perfectly cooked and it was a perfect size entrée of pasta. For desserts he brought an assortment of pastries that we just passed around and shared. It was great, he had cannoli, chocolate flan, lemon cake (highly recommend) and a couple of different torte with ice cream. We finished with espresso. With tip it cost each couple $113. I've paid that in places on federal hill for a meal that was horrible. So, considering it was great food with a different type of experience and pleasant conversations with the owner/chef, it was worth it. Just call and listen to the answering machine to get an idea of what is to come. You just leave a message for your reservation and if he doesn't call you back, then you are good to go. Lol love it.! So, if you are looking for a different relaxed experience and good Italian food, this place is for you.

    Went here for Valentine's Day dinner. It certainly lived up to everything I've read about this place! 5 Stars for sure. The chef was sitting at the bar when we came in, it was very casual. He sits you down like you're having a seat in his house. There were 3 other couples at tables, 2 about to leave. There are probably 7 tables in the whole place. A few of the tables were put together for a a bigger party that didn't end up coming due to the snow storm. Very quaint and quiet place considering the size of the room. It was decked out in Sparta and Trojan war things and Italian soccer team jerseys. The chef came over after the waiter/busboy filled our water glasses(straw for my girlfriend, no straw for me). He asked us what we'd like to drink, we asked for a pinot grigio and he asked if I wanted something a little better. We stuck with the pinot. He comes back with it, opens the bottle in front of you and waits for you to try it first ensuring your satisfaction. A few minutes later, comes back and asks what we want for an appetizer. He said, "I do a light salad with my vinaigrette and 3 little sides; a crostini, a stuffed pepper, and quiche. Or I have soup" We both opted for the salad. I don't really even like quiche's and that was amazing. The stuffed pepper was great.. and the crostini had a little cheese, tomato and olives.. I'm drooling typing this right now. I need to go back! Anyways, after devouring that and asking for more bread(bread was nothing to write home about, came with a little olive oil poured on a plate to dip) the chef comes up and asks my girlfriend, "So what do you like to eat?" My girlfriend smiles and asks for a seafood dish. He goes, "I have some salmon or monkfish." She goes with the salmon. Then he turns to me and asks, "what would you like to eat?" I ask whats good, and starts going through things he can make. After going through some things I went with the first thing he offered which was a roasted pork. All he said was, "I can do a roasted pork, it will be very nice". He left and a couple at another table whispers, "so she got salmon but she doesn't know what else she's getting." We started a brief conversation and they were saying "you never know what you're going to get sometimes but it's incredible every time." Yea, I had to be that guy... when the food came out, I broke out my phone and started taking pictures. I even got one with a flash in but I felt really bad doing it in that type of environment. The lighting is a little low so I'm glad I got to do that because the food looked as amazing as it tasted! I don't eat too much fish but my girlfriend said it was incredible. Her salmon came with a little bit of vegetables and side of pasta with tuna. He told my girlfriend he'd make more food for her if it wasn't enough as the piece of fish was smaller. I got roasted pork with potatoes and a side of veg. My girlfriend had a bite and said "he made you a mans meal". It was sooo good! The potatoes- I dunno how he got them like that! It's funny too cause the whole time there, it seems like he's just hanging out at the bar reading the paper or something. He was so laid back for someone who is the front and back of the house. After dinner, he offered us desert. After 2 couples were offered desert, we seemed to be the only table he offered flan to so my girlfriend went with that. I went with the chocolate cake. The flan was everything you'd expect and it was done perfectly which was impressive. The chocolate cake certainly tasted and looked homemade. It was some of the best chocolate cake I've had. It had a little piece of orange or tangerine on the side covered in coconut and chocolate. I dunno if I actually was eating a fruit, It was really good whatever it was. And a little piece of gelatin or jello like thing that was very cold next to it... yummy! Finally, he offers us coffee. My girlfriend went with what she said was some of the best espresso she's had. I had a coffee in which he said he puts a little bit of cinnamon in it. The taste of the coffee and cinnamon stuck with me the rest of the night and I woke up in the morning craving it, realizing how perfect it was done. Wow. I need to go back and get more of that. Also, he gave us little italian cookies with dessert and then a little liquor desert(chocolate covered cherry). After finishing the bottle of wine, he opened a new one for us and filled our glass one more time as well. :) I'm pretty certain he had a thing for my girlfriend and I'm thinking that's why we were offered flan? Who knows. On the way out he says to my girlfriend, "you look very nice tonight, come back soon, I will cook you something special" or something along the lines of that. We certainly will be back. Amazing. 5 stars, Loved the atmosphere and style and the food is amazing!

    ****Beware Beware Beware**** I should have listened to the yelpers that have this place @ 1 star. I'm not even sure it deserves any stars to be honest. I don't know where to begin. I just want to erase this dining experience from my memory. The fly traps hanging from the dining room ceiling should say all u need to know about this place. The food is average at best. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say the prices are reasonable. The prices are whatever the chef wants them to be. It appears every entree is $16 no matter if u get a pork dish, chicken dish, or a plate of spaghetti. That's right I paid $16 for a plate of plain spaghetti with red sauce. The portion of spaghetti equalled about 1/16 of a box a pasta. The 4oz single breaded piece of chicken parmigiana with 20 or so penne was also $16. My glass of red wine was so skunked I couldn't even drink it. I was scared to send it back because I had no idea if the chef would charge me extra on the bill because all of the prices are made up in his head. What a disgrace! I don't know what hurts more right now....my stomach, my wallet, or my ass from just paying $16 for a pathetic portion of spaghetti. Maybe it was the 2nd serving of bread that increased the cost of the meals. You have no idea because its crapshoot. There is no menu and he can charge you whatever he wants. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for dinner. I guarantee that if you disregard my review and end up eating here u will say holy shit that guy on yelp was right!!!

    This place can and be weird and slightly intimidating but also fun and empowering. There is no menu. Walk in with a dish idea you like and tell him that's what you want. It seems like he has more control over your food then you think. This place is small and he takes his time but it's totally worth it. Bottle of wine, appetizer, main course, desert, coffee abt $50 a person.

    Yep, I can see how the reviews play out, either 1 star or 5 star. So is this the best Italian in RI? I don't know, I have not eaten at all of the places in RI. Is it simply an amazing unique experience that you need to be prepared for? You bet. Fortunately I read the reviews first or I may have been a little worried. But, all of the 5 stars are correct. 1) There is no Menu. The guy will simple ask what you want and carry on a conversation and make your experience unique for you. I will say he seems to love his fresh vegetables though. 2) He really will come over and chat you up. There is no rhyme or reason, it is just fun. So play along, engage and don't be a snob. It is a lot more entertaining. 3) We had Pizza. It was one of his own creation after talking with us. Our youngest daughter wanted just pepperoni. He asked the adults if we did and we all said no. So he counseled us not to listen to the children. Also, if we wanted just a pepperoni pizza, we could go down the road where the 'punks' make pizza. All said tong and cheek. This was one of the best pizzas I have has. The sauce was flavorful, but not slopped all over it. It was fill of great fresh vegetables, cheese and ham. We will be going back.

    We dropped in with some out of owners to take part in Alfie's new offering... Pizza! A light thin crust with bell peppers, asparagus, and Italian ham. I could taste every ingredient in each bite. Wonderfully delicious as always Alfie!

    DO YOURSELF A FAVOR - If you're reading this on Yelp while you're driving around and looking for a place to rest from all your Route 2 shopping, there are some things you need to know about San Vivaldo Trattoria before you go. There are several reasons this might be your go-to Italian eatery in Rhode Island: (1) it's as authentic as it gets (this from someone who has dined around Italy extensively), and the food is par excellence, (2) you enjoy a special atmosphere for a special occasion (my wife and I visited to celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary - the chef's personal attention and conversational style made all the difference, and his dessert offering with candles and music was charming), (3) you're tired of all the routine and want a unique dining experience (this isn't Carraba's - there's no menu, no pricing; expect ~$40 per person if you're looking for a three-course meal with a bottle of wine, and there's a lot of wine to choose from). There are one or two things that - if you aren't paying attention - will be jarring and give you a bad time: (1) again, THIS ISN'T CARRABA'S - the only "menu" that exists is subject to market availability, and the way you order is by talking to the chef. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you aren't comfortable giving up some control (of course personal preference and food allergies will be taken into account) and letting a master chef do his fine work, then politely abstain from visiting, and don't gripe because an Italian immigrant runs his business differently from every insipid "Italian" chain out there. (2) The pricing will be more than fair for the high-end service and culinary creations you will experience, but don't go if money is expected to be an option. It would be rude to haggle about the price of a glass of wine after your tab is $8.00 more than you expected. San Vivaldo is open Wednesdays through Sundays, as the website link will confirm. Part of this probably has to do with the fact that Chef Alfie buys all of his ingredients locally or at a special market in Boston (once weekly). Also, this is a 2-man show, and we all deserve a weekend. Don't judge the establishment from the outside - it's a jewel, in every sense. Service is prompt and professional, prices are fair, and most importantly, the FOOD is AMAZING. Enjoy your time - few places nowadays are brave enough to do it like this. ***UPDATE*** On our way out of the restaurant during our anniversary experience, Alfie told us that he produces authentic Italian pizza for carry out. My wife and I were feeling lazy after our workout last night and took the plunge - the pizza was AWESOME, and a large (fresh, delicious trattoria pizza) was about $15. Just call the restaurant number and tell the chef that you want pizza for carry out and he'll exceed your expectations.

    You should only come here if you're looking for an adventure. You will either love it or you will hate it. I fell into the former camp, but I can easily see how people could fall into the latter. There is no menu. The owner/chef will come chat you up and decide what you are having. Just tell him what you don't eat (vegetarians will have no problem, except perhaps a heavy sigh) and, optionally, a suggestion of what you might be in the mood for, and you and he will come to a decision about what you will be eating. He will judge you based on your mutual decision. If this concerns you, you should probably dine elsewhere. If you make it this far, you're in for a treat. It was decided that I would have an appetizer platter with a salad, bruschetta, frittata, a fish fritter, a small wedge of cheese, and some cured olives. All were delicious. I especially liked the fish fritter; it tasted much fishier than similar dishes I've had elsewhere which are only tasty because they are heavily deep fried (there's a time and a place for that). For my entree, I was to have to a pasta dish with vegetables and chicken. It was also quite delicious. The vegetables were fresh, the chicken was well cooked, and the sauce was flavorful. Dessert was ok. We got a slice a lemon cake and a slice of some kind of chocolate and plantain cake. Not my favorite part of the meal, but still quite good. Keep an open mind, don't expect a waitress with 16 pieces of flair, and get ready for a unique and delicious dining experience.

    My husband and I dined here again last night and it was UNBELIEVABLE!! Alfie is entertaining to say the least. I feel like we are stepping into our Italian Grandparents house. He is in charge of the night and is grateful that we have come back to visit. The pasta dish was the most delicious dish I have ever tasted. The herbs were all fresh from his garden. The Little Necks were local. Of course he explains all of this to you during the ordering process. This conversation is the most exciting part of the night. He really cares what you want to eat. He always wants to impress you with his truly artful culinary creation. We sit back and chuckle with Alfie and other guests at neighboring tables at the funny things he might say . Everyone must experience this restaurant at least once. There is nothing like it and definitely no one like Alfie!!

    I agree with the first reviewer to this restaurant, it is not for everyone. I know a lot of people say "that was the best meal I ever had" but I am 100% serious when I say that I had the best meal of my entire life at San Vivaldo (and I enjoy a lot of food). I went with my husband, his mother, his father and step-mom. We sat down (very very small place, maybe 5 tables). The chef came out and asked us what we wanted...my mother in law said she wanted seafood, he said "I can do this, this or this" and voila, her meal was made. I had the special, it was veal something...but it was absolutely AMAZING! My husband also had veal but a little different and he thought it was fantastic. We had a nice appetizer, 3 things, salad, stuffed pepper and something else. It was just to die for! No menu, no prices...he thinks it up as he goes. If you want a bottle of wine, he opens it, you try it..if you don't like it it's on to the next one. If you are up for an experience in eating (as my dad calls it) this is the place for you. Call the number, he won't answer, but it gives you a sense of what kind of guy he is. If you want to make a reservation just tell him how many and what time. He won't call back to confirm.

    This place is HORRIBLE. Quite possibly one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. I'm not sure the previous reviewer went to the same restaurant. Do your research before going here. There is a accurate review on Urbanspoon and the place is listed as both "San Vivaldo Trattoria" and "Trattoria San Vivaldo." The owner is rude and obnoxious. He had the nerve to mock my wife when she said she wasn't sure what she wanted because there was no menu. Unbelievable! The food was marginal at best and we had no idea what the final bill was going to be. It could have been $50 or $250 with a bottle of wine. He could charge whatever he felt like because nothing is written down. If you are looking for an experience that you will remember for years to come, please dine here. Because after you leave, you will be so pissed that you wasted your time, money and taste buds on this hellish hole called San Vivaldo Trattoria that it will be completely unforgettable.

    This place is great, but it's not for everyone. It's a small place, run buy it's chef owner, with one assistant. Chef Alfie is a true culinary artist, His creations are incredible. So why isn't if for everyone? Well, it just isn't like other restaurants. For example, there are no menus; Alfie chats with you for a couple minutes about your likes and dislikes and then gives you a couple recommendations, and more or less takes control of your meal and your experience from that point on. If you insist on a more traditional restaurant experience; the kind with printed menus and chefs who you never see and who have no opinions as to what you should eat, best avoid this place. But, if you are willing to take a risk and put yourself in the hands of a talented Italian chef, you will enjoy a wonderful dining experience, and some of the best food you will ever eat..

    Statistical fact (as of this review's writing) - all of the reviews for San Vivaldo Trattoria are either 5 or 1 stars - proof that it truly is a "love it or hate it" establishment. I am going to break this trend and go with a 4 star rating. While the meal was outstanding, when i compare it other places that i've given 5 stars to, it falls just a bit short. Let's break it down: - dined on a Saturday night, so it wasn't just the Chef, but also his assistant George taking care of us. The interplay between the two was sometimes quite entertaining, like when opening a bottle of wine, how the Chef said "George, these are for you" and pointed to the wrappings on the table. - The dining room is very small, which makes it an awesome and intimate experience - if you're interested you can listen to the chef's recommendations to other tables and get an idea of what's on the menu that night. - On the downside, the noise can get to be a bit much, depending on the volume of the other diners. As we were finishing up an 8-9 person party was seated which included a few "loud talkers" - their volume was a bit much for a room that size - Although all the courses were delicious, i think my favorite was the appetizer - some simple mescalin greens w/ vinaigrette, a frittatta, bruschetta, and stuffed pepper. As someone that has not liked peppers since i can remember, making a stuffed pepper taste good to my palette is a major achievement. - Minor funny moment w/ George the assistant - after finishing my bruschetta i asked what the chef puts on it, as there was one flavor i could not pick out. He replied, deadpan: "well i'm not sure - you ate it, so i can't see" - Either the chef was in a very jovial mood that evening, or he has mellowed a bit, as he actually asked us if there is anything we didn't like, and although we didn't call anything out, i think he would have been ok if we did (or maybe it was just us - he did call us "very nice people" several times) - After a short conversation, i settled on pork medallions w/ pasta and the girlfriend had beef stroganoff. Both were amazing - the sauces really setting them apart (we got more bread just to make sure we could enjoy it all) - It's a worthy investment to talk to the chef about wines - what you like, what you don't like - he's obviously got a great perspective on flavors and a unique point of view concerning 'high end' wines - i'll leave it at that - For dessert we split a cannoli and lemon cake - the cannoli was of course filled fresh, but the lemon cake actually stood out more and was a excellent capper to a wonderful culinary experience On the whole, as long as you go in with an open mind and understand what to expect, i can't imagine you having anything less than a great experience here. If you walk in expecting menus, and don't want the chef to be "in charge of the night", you're probably going to leave disappointed. Protip - call and make a reservation, even if you're not dining on a busy night. You will get to speak to the man himself, and his accent and manner of speaking is charming over the phone. I actually smiled when he said "You're all set."

    I need to preface this review by stating outright that San Vivaldo Trattoria is one of my very favorite places to go ever. When my husband and I celebrate our anniversary we go here, when my aunt and uncle were leaving for Texas we went here, when my friends came to visit from Louisiana we brought them here. Some harsh truths about the place: It's small. It's privately owned and operated. The Chef has the first and last say about anything in his restaurant. There *is* a menu, but it's rarely offered since the foods of the day tend to be made with local fresh ingredients - the best he can pull together. It is quite possibly unlike any dining experience you have ever had. We have seen many varied and different definitions of 'service' while we've dined at San Vivaldo Trattoria. We've seen a gentleman and his party asked to leave because he refused to stop talking loudly on his cell phone - the dining area is horribly small and it was impossible to not over hear him. We've also seen diners get a complimentary dessert or a bottle of wine or a drink of Chef's personal dessert liquor because he's found the diners engaging. My first visit I asked for coffee with dinner and was given a very brusque and abrupt "No!" before he explained that coffee will ruin the palate and the food experience will not be the same. The quality of the meal at San Vivaldo Trattoria can not be disputed. Chef Alfie is doing what he loves, how he loves to do it and he takes pride in anything that is set before you. Your pleasure in his food is directly and immediately reflected in his face and his bearing. The other thing to consider is that San Vivaldo Trattoria exists not for your pleasure but because Chef wanted the opportunity to do what he loves and it really doesn't matter to him if you visit or not. Insofar as cost goes, the general meal goes thus: Appetizer and/or salad (sometimes a combination of both), bottle wine with dinner, the main course, dessert wine or cappuccino, dessert and then most usually a small glass of desert liquor. The price for two for this is around $60-75 before tip. And you will not leave hungry.

    Another fabulous meal with exceptional service. My only misgiving is that my schedule keeps me from enjoying this little gem more often. Twenty years of dining in NYC, many trips to Italy and business dinners each week across the country has given me a broad and deep restaurant perspective. The Chef provides one of my all time favorites restaurants with his excellent cooking and concern for his customers. If you like the Olive Garden you should probably stay away because this is an old world restaurant that crafts meals from in season ingredients and local vendors. Call and let the chef know you are coming and you will be all set. BTW it is also my children's top pick.

    Someone wrote that this was possible the best Italian restaurant in Rhode Island and all I have to say is that person must be crazy as the guy that owns this place. I have never in my life been so disappointed. We entered the establishment and was seated at a table. The owner, chef and waiter all the same person came out and asked if we wanted a drink I asked for a beer and he gave it to me in a can. We than asked for a menu and he said what do you want to eat and we replied not really sure where is the menu. We don't have one what do you like fish. No fish today ok. they we will have pasta. He then went to the table next to us and told them that he had a fish special. The final straw was when the cat came out and started roaming around the place. STAY AWAY!

    I loved the experience. If you're not prepared for this kind of dining experience, it will be hit or miss. You have to be adventurous and willing to give up control. If you let Alfie be Alfie, he won't disappoint. Think Walter Mathiau or Mr Wilson or some other curmudgeon. He's an incredible chef and is passionate about cooking. But, he wants you to eat what he tells you is on the menu (even though there is no menu). I always choose the first or second thing he mentions and I haven't been disappointed. Most importantly, he won't be disappointed. One time, four of us went for dinner-three of us had been there but the fourth had not. We purposefully gave no advise. Unfortunately, she didn't order anything he mentioned and proceeded to ask if he had veal parmigiana. He just rolled his eyes and walked away. Everyone in the place erupted in laughter while asking her if she was crazy. Our three meals were fantastic while her veal parmigiana was dry and overcooked. I'm sure it was on purpose. The banter between the patrons was priceless!! I think she learned a lesson. Don't insult Alfie by ordering like you were at the Olive Garden!! Have fun, roll with the punches and have a great meal! Treat him as if you just took a Dale Carnegie class and you will be treated well. He may even take out his personal stash of home made Lemoncella and start feeding you free shots.
